John Martin foi um pintor, gravador e ilustrador romântico inglês. Ele foi célebre por suas pinturas tipicamente vastas e melodramáticas de temas religiosos e composições fantásticas, povoadas com figuras minúsculas colocadas em paisagens imponentes. As pinturas de Martin e as gravuras feitas a partir delas tiveram grande sucesso com o público em geral - em 1821 Thomas Lawrence se referiu a ele como "o pintor mais popular de sua época" - mas suas obras foram criticadas por John Ruskin e outros críticos.
